Did you know Sheffield’s Harcourt Road is far from just an ordinary Victorian street?

It was named after 19th-century politician Sir William Harcourt, in recognition of his work as Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer. Beyond its political roots, the street has witnessed Sheffield’s growth and transformation over the centuries. Nearby, a series of lakes were originally built as water reservoirs—formerly known as the Great Dam—until they were incorporated into Crookes Valley Park in the 1950s.

Harcourt Road has also been home to some remarkable people—none more so than John George Graves, a mail-order pioneer and one of Sheffield’s greatest benefactors. He lived right here before gifting the city parks, galleries, and even part of the university. Over the years, the street has adapted with the times—housing World War II refugees, post-war migrants, students, and, more recently, a growing number of families, thanks to strong community and environmental campaigns.
